The Women’s Room is the first and only female playwright unit in Waterloo Region, created as a response to the apparent need to hear the voices of women living and working in this area. A 2015 study by the Canadian Centre for Policy Alternatives found Waterloo Region to be the worst place in Canada to be a woman. Equal pay, safety, health, and eduction for women can only be achieved by valuing women’s needs, contributions, and stories.
The theme of our inaugural unit is “Ghosts of KW” involving any and all connotations the word “ghost” carries. Each writer is developing a new piece of work over the course of the 6 months, using the theme as a jumping off point.
The unit meets twice a month from 7-10pm at Pat The Dog Theatre Creation, 159 Frederick Street, Kitchener, ON. Meetings provide writers the chance to collaborate, share their work, and network with other playwrights in the community. Dramaturgical support is offered to each writer, ultimately culminating in a week-long play reading series.
