Deadline Extended: Apply by October 14, 2016.

Are you a female identified playwright living near Kitchener, Waterloo or Cambridge?

We are thrilled to announce The Women’s Room, a new initiative by Sonderlust in partnership with Pat the Dog Theatre Creation. We are calling for 7 female playwrights to join this inaugural unit, running from November, 2016 to April, 2017. Emerging or established playwrights may apply.

We’ve created the first and only female playwright unit in Waterloo Region as a response to the apparent need to hear the voices of women living and working in this area. A 2015 study by the Canadian Centre for Policy Alternatives found Waterloo Region to be the worst place in Canada to be a woman. Equal pay, safety, health, and eduction for women can only be achieved by valuing women’s needs, contributions, and stories.

The theme of this year’s unit is “Ghosts of KW,” keeping in mind any and all connotations the word “ghost” carries. Each writer will develop a new piece of work over the course of the 6 months, using the theme as a jumping off point.

The unit will meet twice a month from 7-10pm at Pat The Dog Theatre Creation, 159 Frederick Street, Kitchener, ON. Meetings will be a chance for writers to collaborate, share their work, and network with other playwrights in the community. Dramaturgical support will be offered to each writer. Ultimately, this process will culminate in a week-long play reading series.

Sonderlust collective is passionate about broadening the spectrum of stories presented onstage, as well as increasing the diversity of the people and artists telling them.

If you are a female identified playwright and would like to apply to the unit, please send your CV, bio and a brief sample of your work (max 15 pages) to admin@patthedog.org by October 14, 2016.

We look forward to hearing from you soon!
