Pat the Dog Theatre Creation is delighted to announce a special opportunity for playwrights in Southwestern Ontario. Through the generous support of The Good Foundation, we are pleased to offer a series of Theatre Creation Workshops specifically designed for the emerging playwright.  These “hands-on” intensives incorporate exercises, free writing and lots of active conversation about what makes a good play great.  Participants are encouraged to interact and collaborative in a sharing, safe environment.

PTD Playwright in Residence Matthew Heiti and Lisa O’Connell, PTD’s artistic director, will lead all sessions.

About Our Session Leaders

Matthew Heiti

Born in a meteor crater called Sudbury, Matthew Heiti holds a BFA in Acting from Ryerson University and an MA in Creative Writing from the University of New Brunswick. He is an award-winning playwright, a Genie-nominated screenwriter, and his first novel, The City Still Breathing, is published by Coach House Books. His play about teen mental health, Black Dog: 4 vs the wrld, will be published by Playwrights Canada Press in 2016. A proud advocate for the mythology of region, Matthew serves as Playwright-in-Residence with Pat the Dog, where he is co-director of PlaySmelter, Northern Ontario’s first workshop and reading festival of new plays. He is also in-residence with the Sudbury Theatre Centre, where he runs the Playwrights’ Junction, a workshop for developing writers. In his down time, he works on old bicycles and explores new work in abandoned places with Crestfallen.

 

Lisa O’Connell

Lisa O’Connell is the founding Artistic Director of Pat the Dog Theatre Creation. PTD playwrights’ work has been presented at the Magnetic North Theatre Festival, SummerWorks Theatre Festival, MT Space Theatre, Sudbury Theatre Centre, Theatre Aquarius, The Grand Theatre, among others. O’Connell serves on the Advocacy Committee of the Playwrights Guild of Canada, the Artistic Practices Committee of the Professional Association of Canadian Theatres.  She is the recipient of a Special Jury Award (2015) and the Gowlings Literary Award (2010) from Arts Awards Waterloo and delivered the closing Keynote address at the Canadian Association of Theatre Researchers Conference in 2013. O’Connell has been published in Canadian Theatre Review, The Toronto Star, The Globe and Mail, Chatelaine, among others.
